Non-Profits and the Law

Businesses and individuals often need the advice of a variety of lawyers, with specialties ranging from tax, estate planning, corporate regulations and litigation.  Philanthropies, non-profits also often need to retain top quality legal minds.  There are even some non-profit groups that are formed around simply the legalities of their cause.

Two non-profit IRC Section 501(c)3 organizations that are truly built around lawyers are the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) headquartered in New York and the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) headquartered in California.

The NRDC is the one of the nation’s most powerful environmental groups.  Founded in 1970 by lawyers and law students they are the group that takes big corporations to court to challenge poor environmental practices and change the laws.  They use the law to protect our oceans, face global warming and climate control and reduce toxins from our environment and much more.  They lead the fight against the XL Pipeline.  Bobby F. Kennedy Jr. has been a key attorney with the group and Robert Redford and Bishop Desmond Tutu lend their voices.

The ALDF is here to protect our animals from abusers.  We are all often shocked at the abuse that innocent animals face and the ALDF lawyers fights for tougher laws for those convicted of animal abuse.  They are also working on an animal abuse registry so that serial animal abusers are stopped from adopting animals.

These are two of my personal favorite groups that retain top legal minds in the fight to protect our environment and the animals that coexist besides us.
